What is Rhinoplasty?
The word Rhinoplasty literally means to reshape the nose, which is exactly what happens during surgery. Small incisions are made inside the nose and, depending on the specific type of reconstruction being done, the surgeon carefully removes or rearranges the underlying bone and soft cartilage in order to reshape and resize the nose. Sometimes tissue is added and sometimes it's removed. Various precision instruments are used to accomplish the surgery, which usually lasts from two to three hours

What Might You Experience While Recovering From Nose Surgery?
Immediately following surgery, a small lightweight splint will be placed on your nose to protect the newly shaped structure and will remain in place for about a week. Nasal pads will also be inserted to protect the septum and there will be a general feeling of stuffiness for a few days following surgery. Avoid blowing your nose or wearing glasses until your doctor has given permission to do so.
Pain is generally minimal following Rhinoplasty and best controlled with perscription medications. There will some bruising and discoloration around the eyes which will disappear within two to three weeks and any swelling that occurs can be reduced by applying cold compresses and keeping the head slightly elevated when reclining. Some slight swelling may last as long as two to three months, occasionally up to 6 months.
Immediately after any surgery you should be as quiet and restful as possible with limited movement to help control discomfort. Be gentle and give yourself as much TLC as you can for the first few days.
Normal activities may be resumed after three weeks but strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks particularly if you have high blood pressure. Follow-up exams will be scheduled as it is very important to monitor the healing process.
