As the center of the face, the nose is also the center of attention. If it's too big, too long, too wide, too bumpy, it can make even an attractive person look less so and erode self-esteem. If it's been broken, injured, or is deformed, it can make breathing difficult and cause health issues. There are many reasons why thousands of people each year elect to have nasal reconstruction surgery -- or Rhinoplasty -- making it the most popular cosmetic surgery performed today.
Although very popular, Rhinoplasty is, however, a delicate operation. It requires not only intricate surgical skills, but also an artistic eye for the aesthetic side of the procedure. The best cosmetic surgeons have the ability to not only "blend" the nose into the face, but also to bring harmony and alignment to the entire facial appearance.
In Beverly Hills, Dr. D. David Saadat performs dozens of Rhinoplasty surgeries each year on clients from all over the world. Renowned for his ability to work with the intricate details of the procedure and retain the most natural look to the nose and face, Dr. Saadat and his staff offer patients a commitment to cosmetic surgery excellence and outstanding patient care.

Rhinoplasty is one cosmetic surgery that may be as much about function as appearance. A deformed or damaged nose may not work properly causing severe health issues for the patient, often causing years of suffering. Whether you're considering the Rhinoplasty procedure for functional or for cosmetic reasons, the decision to engage the best surgeon possible is the first, and most critical, decision to make. Taking into account age, skin type, and ethnic background, your surgeon can help you determine realistic goals and which Rhinoplasty technique or cosmetic procedures might best fit your individual needs.
If you are considering a Rhinoplasty procedure, ask yourself if any -- or all -- are the desired effects that you want:
All Rhinoplasty candidates, both men and women, should be in general good health and at least 16 years of age to ensure that the nasal bone has matured and stabilized before having facial surgery.
Insurance generally does not cover the Rhinoplasty surgery unless it is for a major deformity or injury, but it is the responsibility of the patient to investigate the degree of coverage by their specific carrier. Insurance will in many cases cover the medical portion of nasal surgery this is called the Septoplasty which is the inner part of the nose. Insurane companies have strict guidelines for this procedure and may often require you to have a CT scan prior to authorizing to verify that there is a medical reason for you having this surgery, a good example of this may be a deviated septum which is blocking the nasal airway making it difficult for you to breathe.
When considering whether Rhinoplasty is a good personal choice for you, remember that all cosmetic surgeries are very intricate procedures which require the most skilled surgical hands doing delicate precision work. If you are seriously considering nasal reconstruction for whatever reason, it is important that you work with a surgeon you can trust.
The word Rhinoplasty literally means to reshape the nose, which is exactly what happens during surgery. Small incisions are made inside the nose and, depending on the specific type of reconstruction being done, the surgeon carefully removes or rearranges the underlying bone and soft cartilage in order to reshape and resize the nose. Sometimes tissue is added and sometimes it's removed. Various precision instruments are used to accomplish the surgery, which usually lasts from two to three hours
Rhinoplasty can be performed in an outpatient surgical facility,or a hospital and must be done under either general or IV sedation , all of which will be discussed during the initial patient consultation with the doctor.
Immediately following surgery, a small lightweight splint will be placed on your nose to protect the newly shaped structure and will remain in place for about a week. Nasal pads will also be inserted to protect the septum and there will be a general feeling of stuffiness for a few days following surgery. Avoid blowing your nose or wearing glasses until your doctor has given permission to do so.
Pain is generally minimal following Rhinoplasty and best controlled with perscription medications. There will some bruising and discoloration around the eyes which will disappear within two to three weeks and any swelling that occurs can be reduced by applying cold compresses and keeping the head slightly elevated when reclining. Some slight swelling may last as long as two to three months, occasionally up to 6 months.
Immediately after any surgery you should be as quiet and restful as possible with limited movement to help control discomfort. Be gentle and give yourself as much TLC as you can for the first few days.
Normal activities may be resumed after three weeks but strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks particularly if you have high blood pressure. Follow-up exams will be scheduled as it is very important to monitor the healing process.
It is important for you, as you consider having Rhinoplasty surgery, to differentiate what each of the surgeons in your area has to offer . . . not only from a surgical perspective, which is your first criteria, but also from a personal perspective. Your decision to have this surgery needs to be built upon a trust of the surgeon, the staff, and their ability to offer guidance through what is a time-consuming, expensive but, yes, rewarding procedure. The bottom line is . . . . are you comfortable with everything that this surgeon and his staff are offering to you as a patient?
