Because we're now living longer, healthier lives, we sometimes need a little help with the role that gravity, sun, and genetics play on our skin over the years, especially on the face and neck. We can work out, eat right, even recolor the gray in our hair, but we can't exercise away the loose skin under our chin.
If you've been self-conscious for years about the unsightliness of your neck, maybe it's time to consider giving Mother Nature a hand. Maybe it's time to consider a Neck Lift. A firmer, younger-looking neck line can remove years from your appearance and even make you look slimmer. Friends will immediately notice the dramatic results of a Neck Life procedure.

Before considering any cosmetic surgery, it's important to have a one-on-one consultation with the physician you've chosen to determine which -- if any -- procedure might be best for you personally. The most desireable surgical candidates are healthy men and women, usually between the ages of 30 and 70, who have realistic goals for a change in their appearance. A Neck Lift might not make you look like a Hollywood Star . . . but it can definitely and dramatically improve your own individual look and make you look healthier, younger, and more toned.
If you are considering a Neck Lift procedure, ask yourself if any -- or all -- are the desired effects that you want:
A Neck Lift is often done in conjunction with a complete Face Lift procedure, a Brow Lift, or various Liposuction techniques, all of which are very common, very popular cosmetic surgeries. During your initial consultation with Dr. Saadat, you can discuss whether these options are right for you. You will also have an opportunity to look at before-and-after photos to get a better idea of the new look you'd like to realistically achieve from your surgery.
When considering whether a Neck Lift is a good personal choice for you, remember that all cosmetic surgeries are very intricate procedures which require the most skilled surgical hands doing precise delicate work. If you are seriously considering any neck or face surgery, for whatever reason, it is important that you work with a board certified surgeon you can trust.
The neck line usually becomes droopy for one of several reasons: the effects of aging; a dramatic weight loss or gain; or genetic factors. Sometimes it's all of them. But there's no exercise to repair the undesirable "turkey neck" look. Neck Lift surgery is the only way to rejuvenate the contouring line of your neck line and give you a younger and firmer look after only a few weeks. The surgery itself usually takes several hours depending on the extent of the repair and can be performed on an out-patient basis in a hospital or out-patient surgical setting.
There are three possible Neck Lift procedures to consider and discuss with your surgeon during your consultation. If there is a lot of excess fat on the neck, liposuction may be done first. If it's necessary to remove excess skin, the procedure is called cervicoplasty, and the third type is platysmaplasty, which tightens the central muscles usually to get rid of the deeper, more pronounced creases and rolls. All three procedures may be done seperately, at the same time, or may even be performed in conjunction with other cosmetic surgeries, such as a face or brow lift. In most cases Dr. Saadat prefers to do all at the same time, this ensures the best results, and enables the results to last any where from 5 to 10 years.
For the liposuction process, a small incision is made under the chin and small hollow tubes, called cannulas, are inserted to break up and remove fatty tissue. For either cervicoplasty or platysmaplasty, small incisions are made under the chin, behind the ears, or both, again depending upon the extent of the repair. The skin is then gently lifted, excess tissue or muscle trimmed, and then small sutures are put in position to permanently secure the restored areas. Bandages will cover the neck to protect the incisions and help reduce swelling, bruising, and discomfort.
The day after your Neck Lift surgery you should be as quiet and restful as possible and try to limit turning your neck very much for the first week or two. Keep your head slightly elevated when reclining and drink plenty of fluids. Your bandages can usually be removed 1 week after surgery and you will likely have your initial follow-up visit within the first few days.
Pain is generally minimal following Neck Lift surgery and best controlled with prescription medications, but avoid using aspirin and alcohol for a few weeks. There will some bruising and swelling of the neck, jaw, and possibly the ears, which will disappear in about ten days, and it's natural to also experience some tingling or numbness. Any excessive pain, redness, or an elevated temperature, however, should be reported to your doctor immediately.
Normal activities may be resumed after about two weeks but strenuous activity or heavy lifting should be avoided for 5 to 6 weeks particularly if you have high blood pressure. Wait for your doctor to tell you when it's okay to go back to your "regular life". Make sure you schedule and go to your follow-up exams, as it's very important to monitor the healing process. Also make sure that you take it easy and listen to your body throughout the entire recovery period . . . you'll heal faster and better if you do.
It is important for you, as you consider having Neck Lift surgery, to differentiate what various surgeons in your area have to offer . . . not only from a surgical perspective, which is your first criteria, but also from a personal perspective. Your decision to have this surgery needs to be built upon a trust of the surgeon, the staff, and their ability to offer guidance through what is a time-consuming, expensive but, yes, rewarding procedure. The bottom line is . . . . are you comfortable with everything that this surgeon and his staff are offering to you as a patient?
