What Happens During the Facelift Procedure?
A Facelift, or Rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that gently tightens the loose, sagging skin, muscle and fat on the face to better redefine bone structure and give the face a firmer, younger appearance. Other enhancement procedures may be done at the same time to compliment the facelift, such as a brow, eyelid, or neck lift, or facial liposuction to remove fatty deposits in the face, but these are options based on specific client needs and should be part of an initial consultation with Dr. Saadat.
During surgery, small incisions are made just inside the hairline and follow the contour of the front of the ear to the back of the ear toward the lower scalp. The skin is then gently stretched and lightened of excess tissue to form -- after healing -- a more contoured, sculpted, natural line to the facial bone structure thus renewing a more youthful appearance to the face.
Depending on the exact procedures being scheduled, your surgery can take from two to four hours, and in some cases, a drainage tube may be inserted to aid recovery. Patients feel little or no pain with the use of mild sedatives and local or mild intravenous anesthesia.
The results of Cosmetic Facelifts generally last ten to fifteen years and are equally beneficial to both men and women.
Recovering From Your Facelift
Immediately following surgery, bandages are custom fitted in order to protect the incisions, decrease swelling, and shorten the recovery period. For the first few days, you should be as quiet and restful as possible with limited movement. In almost all cases, pain will be controlled with over-the-counter medication. Bandages are removed within two days after surgery and, as should be expected, there will be swelling and bruising, which will fade with cold compresses, time, and patience. Almost all swelling and bruising is gone within seven to fourteen days. Sutures, stitches, clips, and/or staples that have been inserted during surgery will normally be removed within five to ten days following surgery.
Facelift recovery typically takes two to three weeks but the full healing process can take between two to three months, during which time, however, you will see a more youthful appearance in the mirror every morning. Any scarring that occurs generally goes unnoticed and, in most situations, makeup can be worn to further conceal any noticeable effects from the surgery.
